Dutiyaabhisandasutta

The four factors of stream-entry—with generosity as the fourth—are streams of merit, and like the ocean cannot be counted. With verses.

ข้อ ๑๖๐๗ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันเป็นปัจจัยนำมาซึ่งความสุข ๔ ประการนี้ ๔ ประการเป็นไฉน? อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันไม่หวั่นไหวในพระพุทธเจ้าว่า แม้เพราะเหตุนี้ๆ พระผู้มีพระภาคพระองค์นั้น ฯลฯ เป็นผู้จำแนกธรรม นี้เป็นห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันนำมาซึ่งความสุขประการที่ ๑ อีกประการหนึ่ง อริยสาวกประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันไม่หวั่นไหวในพระธรรม … นี้เป็นห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันนำมาซึ่งความสุขประการที่ ๒ อีกประการหนึ่ง อริยสาวกประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันไม่หวั่นไหวในพระสงฆ์ … นี้เป็นห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันนำมาซึ่งความสุขประการที่ ๓ อีกประการหนึ่ง อริยสาวกมีใจปราศจากความตระหนี่อันเป็นมลทิน มีจาคะอันไม่ติดขัด มีฝ่ามืออันชุ่ม ยินดีในการสละ ควรแก่การขอ ยินดีในการจำแนกทาน อยู่ครอบครองเรือน นี้เป็นห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันนำมาซึ่งความสุขประการที่ ๔ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันเป็นปัจจัยนำมาซึ่งความสุข ๔ ประการนี้แล.

ข้อ ๑๖๐๘ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ใครๆ จะนับจะประมาณบุญของอริยสาวกผู้ประกอบด้วยห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล ๔ ประการนี้ว่า ห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันเป็นปัจจัยนำมาซึ่งความสุข มีประมาณเท่านี้ มิใช่กระทำได้โดยง่าย ที่แท้ ห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล ย่อมถึงความนับว่า เป็นกองบุญใหญ่ จะนับจะประมาณมิได้.

ข้อ ๑๖๐๙ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย มหานทีเหล่านี้ คือ แม่น้ำคงคา ยมุนา อจิรวดี สรภู มหี ย่อมไหลเรื่อยไปที่ปากน้ำใด จะนับจะประมาณน้ำที่ปากน้ำนั้นว่า ประมาณเท่านี้อาฬหกะ หรือร้อยอาฬหกะ พันอาฬหกะ แสนอาฬหกะ มิใช่กระทำได้โดยง่าย ที่แท้ แม่น้ำย่อมถึงความนับว่า เป็นกองน้ำใหญ่ จะนับจะประมาณมิได้ แม้ฉันใด ใครๆ จะนับจะประมาณบุญของอริยสาวกผู้ประกอบด้วยห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล ๔ ประการนี้ว่า ห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันเป็นปัจจัยนำมาซึ่งความสุข มีประมาณเท่านี้ มิใช่กระทำได้โดยง่าย ที่แท้ ห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล ย่อมถึงความนับว่าเป็นกองบุญใหญ่ จะนับจะประมาณมิได้ ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสพระพุทธพจน์นี้ว่า

แม่น้ำเป็นอันมากที่หมู่คือคณะนรชนอาศัยแล้ว ย่อมไหลไปสู่

สาครทะเลหลวง ซึ่งจะประมาณมิได้ เป็นที่ขังน้ำอย่างใหญ่ มีสิ่งที่

น่ากลัวมาก เป็นที่อยู่ของหมู่รัตนะ ฉันใด สายธารแห่งบุญย่อมไหล

ไปสู่นรชนผู้เป็นบัณฑิต ผู้ให้ข้าว น้ำ ผ้า ที่นอน ที่นั่งและเครื่องปูลาด

เหมือนแม่น้ำไหลไปสู่สาคร ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน.

    Furthermore, a noble disciple lives at home with heart rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.

    This is the fourth kind of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness that nurtures happiness.

    Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi puññābhisandehi kusalābhisandehi samannāgatassa ariyasāvakassa na sukaraṁ puññassa pamāṇaṁ gaṇetuṁ:

    When a noble disciple has these four kinds of overflowing merit and goodness, it’s not easy to count how much merit they have by saying that

    ‘ettako puññābhisando, kusalābhisando, sukhassāhāro’ti.

    this is the extent of their overflowing merit, overflowing goodness that nurtures happiness.

    Atha kho asaṅkhyeyyo appameyyo mahāpuññakkhandhotveva saṅkhyaṁ gacchati.

    It’s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of merit.

    Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yatthimā mahānadiyo saṁsandanti samenti, seyyathidaṁ—

    There are places where the great rivers—the Ganges, Yamunā, Aciravatī, Sarabhū, and Mahī—join together and converge.

    gaṅgā, yamunā, aciravatī, sarabhū, mahī, tattha na sukaraṁ udakassa pamāṇaṁ gaṇetuṁ:

    ‘ettakāni udakāḷhakānī’ti vā ‘ettakāni udakāḷhakasatānī’ti vā ‘ettakāni udakāḷhakasahassānī’ti vā ‘ettakāni udakāḷhakasatasahassānī’ti vāti.

    how many gallons, how many hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands of gallons there are.

    Atha kho asaṅkhyeyyo appameyyo mahāudakakkhandhotveva saṅkhyaṁ gacchati.

    It’s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of water.

    Evameva kho, bhikkhave, imehi catūhi puññābhisandehi kusalābhisandehi samannāgatassa ariyasāvakassa na sukaraṁ puññassa pamāṇaṁ gaṇetuṁ:

    In the same way, when a noble disciple has these four kinds of overflowing merit and goodness, it’s not easy to count how much merit they have by saying that

    ‘ettako puññābhisando, kusalābhisando, sukhassāhāro’ti.

    and though the rivers are many,

    Najjo yathā naragaṇasaṅghasevitā,

    all reach the great deep, the boundless ocean,

  29. 6.4

    Puthū savantī upayanti sāgaraṁ.

    the cruel sea that’s home to precious gems.

  30. 7.1

    Evaṁ naraṁ annapānavatthadadaṁ,

    So too, when a person gives food, drink, and clothes;

  31. 7.2

    Seyyāni paccattharaṇassa dāyakaṁ;

    and they’re a giver of beds, seats, and mats—

  32. 7.3

    Puññassa dhārā upayanti paṇḍitaṁ,

    the streams of merit reach that astute person,

  33. 7.4

    Najjo yathā vārivahāva sāgaran”ti.

    as the rivers bring their waters to the sea.”
