Vaṅgantaputtaupasenattheragāthā
Upasena son of Vaṅgantā
- 1.1
“Vivittaṁ appanigghosaṁ,
In order to go on retreat,
- 1.2
vāḷamiganisevitaṁ;
a monk should stay in lodgings
- 1.3
Seve senāsanaṁ bhikkhu,
that are secluded and quiet,
- 1.4
paṭisallānakāraṇā.
frequented by beasts of prey.
- 2.1
Saṅkārapuñjā āhatvā,
Having gathered scraps from rubbish heaps,
- 2.2
susānā rathiyāhi ca;
cemeteries and streets,
- 2.3
Tato saṅghāṭikaṁ katvā,
and making an outer robe from them,
- 2.4
lūkhaṁ dhāreyya cīvaraṁ.
one should wear that coarse robe.

Nīcaṁ manaṁ karitvāna,
Humbling their heart,
- 3.2
sapadānaṁ kulā kulaṁ;
a mendicant should walk for alms
- 3.3
Piṇḍikāya care bhikkhu,
from family to family indiscriminately,
- 3.4
guttadvāro susaṁvuto.
with sense doors guarded, well-restrained.

Lūkhenapi vā santusse,
They should be content even with coarse food,
- 4.2
nāññaṁ patthe rasaṁ bahuṁ;
not hoping for lots of flavors.

Rasesu anugiddhassa,
The mind that’s greedy for flavors
- 4.4
jhāne na ramatī mano.
doesn’t enjoy absorption.
- 5.1
Appiccho ceva santuṭṭho,
With few wishes, content,
- 5.2
pavivitto vase muni;
a sage should live secluded,
- 5.3
Asaṁsaṭṭho gahaṭṭhehi,
mixing with neither
- 5.4
anāgārehi cūbhayaṁ.
householders nor the homeless.
- 6.1
Yathā jaḷo va mūgo va,
They should present themselves
- 6.2
attānaṁ dassaye tathā;
as if stupid or dumb;
- 6.3
Nātivelaṁ sambhāseyya,
an astute person would not speak overly long
- 6.4
saṅghamajjhamhi paṇḍito.
in the midst of the Saṅgha.
- 7.1
Na so upavade kañci,
They would not insult anyone,
- 7.2
upaghātaṁ vivajjaye;
and would avoid causing damage.
- 7.3
Saṁvuto pātimokkhasmiṁ,
Restrained in the monastic code,
- 7.4
mattaññū cassa bhojane.
they would eat in moderation.
- 8.1
Suggahītanimittassa,
Expert in the arising of thought,
- 8.2
cittassuppādakovido;
they would grasp well the pattern of the mind.
- 8.3
Samathaṁ anuyuñjeyya,
They would be devoted to practicing
- 8.4
kālena ca vipassanaṁ.
serenity and discernment at the right time.
- 9.1
Vīriyasātaccasampanno,
Though endowed with energy and persistence,
- 9.2
yuttayogo sadā siyā;
and always devoted to meditation,
- 9.3
Na ca appatvā dukkhantaṁ,
a wise person would not be too sure of themselves,
- 9.4
vissāsaṁ eyya paṇḍito.
until they have attained the end of suffering.
- 10.1
Evaṁ viharamānassa,
For a mendicant who meditates in this way,
- 10.2
suddhikāmassa bhikkhuno;
longing for purification,
- 10.3
Khīyanti āsavā sabbe,
all their defilements wither away,
- 10.4
nibbutiñcādhigacchatī”ti.
and they realize quenching.
