Adantaaguttasutta

The six fields of contact lead to suffering if left unguarded, but if guarded lead to happiness. A lengthy set of verses illustrate this.

ฉบับหลวงสังคัยหสูตรที่ ๑

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ผัสสายตนะ ๖ ประการนี้ ที่บุคคลไม่ฝึกฝน ไม่คุ้มครอง ไม่รักษา ไม่สำรวมระวังแล้ว ย่อมนำทุกข์หนักมาให้ ผัสสายตนะ ๖ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ จักษุ โสตะ ฆานะ ชิวหา กาย ใจ ที่บุคคลไม่ฝึกฝน ไม่คุ้มครอง ไม่รักษา ไม่สำรวมระวังแล้ว ย่อมนำทุกข์หนักมาให้ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ผัสสายตนะ ๖ ประการนี้แล ที่บุคคลไม่ฝึกฝน ไม่คุ้มครอง ไม่รักษา ไม่สำรวมระวังแล้ว ย่อมนำทุกข์หนักมาให้ ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ผัสสายตนะ ๖ ประการนี้ ที่บุคคลฝึกฝนดี คุ้มครองดี รักษาดี สำรวมระวังดีแล้ว ย่อมนำสุขมากมาให้ ผัสสายตนะ ๖ เป็นไฉน คือ จักษุ โสตะ ฆานะ ชิวหา กาย ใจ ที่บุคคลฝึกฝนดี คุ้มครองดี รักษาดี สำรวมระวังดีแล้ว ย่อมนำสุขมากมาให้ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ผัสสายตนะ ๖ ประการนี้แล ที่บุคคลฝึกฝนดี คุ้มครองดี รักษาดี สำรวมระวังดีแล้ว ย่อมนำสุขมากมาให้ พระผู้มีพระภาคผู้สุคตศาสดา ครั้นได้ตรัสไวยากรณภาษิตนี้จบลงแล้ว จึงได้ตรัสคาถาประพันธ์ต่อไปอีกว่า ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลไม่สำรวมผัสสายตนะ ๖ นั่นแหละ เว้นการสำรวมในอายตนะใด ย่อมเข้าถึงทุกข์ บุคคลเหล่าใดได้สำรวมระวังอายตนะเหล่านั้น บุคคลเหล่านั้นมีศรัทธาเป็นเพื่อนสอง ย่อมเป็นผู้อันราคะไม่ชุ่มอยู่ บุคคลเห็นรูปที่ชอบใจและเห็นรูปที่ไม่ชอบใจแล้ว พึงบรรเทาราคะในรูปที่ชอบใจ และไม่พึงเสียใจว่า รูปไม่น่ารักของเรา (เราเห็นรูปไม่น่ารักเข้าแล้ว) ได้ยินเสียงที่น่ารักและเสียงที่ไม่น่ารัก พึงสงบใจในเสียงที่น่ารัก และพึงบรรเทาโทสะในเสียงที่น่ารัก และไม่พึงเสียใจว่า เสียงไม่น่ารักของเรา (เราได้ฟังเสียงที่ไม่น่ารักเข้าแล้ว) ได้ดมกลิ่นที่ชอบใจอันน่ายินดี และได้ดมกลิ่นที่ไม่สะอาด ไม่น่ารักใคร่ พึงบรรเทาความหงุดหงิดในกลิ่นที่ไม่น่าใคร่ และไม่พึงพอใจในกลิ่นที่น่าใคร่ ได้ลิ้มรสที่อร่อยเล็กน้อย และลิ้มรสที่ไม่อร่อยในบางคราว ไม่พึงลิ้มรสที่อร่อยด้วยความติดใจ และไม่ควรยินร้ายในเมื่อลิ้มรสที่ไม่อร่อย ถูกสัมผัสที่เป็นสุขกระทบเข้าแล้ว และถูกผัสสะที่เป็นทุกข์กระทบเข้าแล้ว ไม่พึงหวั่นไหวในระหว่างๆ ควรวางเฉยผัสสะทั้งที่เป็นสุข ทั้งที่เป็นทุกข์ ทั้งสองไม่ควรยินดี ไม่ควรยินร้ายเพราะผัสสะอะไรๆ นรชนทั้งหลายที่ทรามปัญญา มีความสำคัญในกิเลสเป็นเหตุให้เนิ่นช้า ยินดีอยู่ด้วยกิเลสเป็นเหตุให้เนิ่นช้า เป็นสัตว์ที่มีสัญญาย่อมวกเวียนอยู่ ก็บุคคลบรรเทาใจที่ประกอบด้วยปัญจกามคุณทั้งปวงแล้ว ย่อมรักษาใจให้ประกอบด้วยเนกขัมมะ ใจที่บุคคลเจริญดีแล้วในอารมณ์ ๖ อย่างนี้ ในกาลใด ในกาลนั้น จิตของบุคคลนั้นอันสุขสัมผัสกระทบเข้าแล้ว ย่อมไม่หวั่นไหวในที่ไหนๆ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เธอทั้งหลายปราบราคะและโทสะเสียแล้ว ย่อมเป็นผู้ถึงนิพพานซึ่งเป็นฝั่งข้างโน้นแห่งชาติและมรณะ ฯ

    “Saḷeva phassāyatanāni bhikkhavo,

    “Mendicants, it’s just the six fields of contact

    Asaṁvuto yattha dukkhaṁ nigacchati;

    that lead the unrestrained to suffering.

    Tesañca ye saṁvaraṇaṁ avedisuṁ,

    Those who understand how to restrain them

    Saddhādutiyā viharantānavassutā.

    live with faith as partner, not festering.

  23. 4.1

    Disvāna rūpāni manoramāni,

    When you’ve seen pleasant sights

  24. 4.2

    Athopi disvāna amanoramāni;

    and unpleasant ones, too,

  25. 4.3

    Manorame rāgapathaṁ vinodaye,

    dispel all manner of desire for the pleasant,

  26. 4.4

    Na cāppiyaṁ meti manaṁ padosaye.

    without hating what you don’t like.

  27. 5.1

    Saddañca sutvā dubhayaṁ piyāppiyaṁ,

    When you’ve heard sounds both liked and disliked,

  28. 5.2

    Piyamhi sadde na samucchito siyā;

    don’t fall under the thrall of sounds you like,

  29. 5.3

    Athoppiye dosagataṁ vinodaye,

    dispel hate for the unliked,

  30. 5.4

    Na cāppiyaṁ meti manaṁ padosaye.

    and don’t hurt your mind
    by thinking of what you don’t like.

  31. 6.1

    Gandhañca ghatvā surabhiṁ manoramaṁ,

    When you’ve smelled a pleasant, fragrant scent,

  32. 6.2

    Athopi ghatvā asuciṁ akantiyaṁ;

    and one that’s foul and unpleasant,

  33. 6.3

    Akantiyasmiṁ paṭighaṁ vinodaye,

    dispel aversion for the unpleasant,

  34. 6.4

    Chandānunīto na ca kantiye siyā.

    while not yielding to desire for the pleasant.

  35. 7.1

    Rasañca bhotvāna asāditañca sāduṁ,

    When you’ve enjoyed a sweet, delicious taste,

  36. 7.2

    Athopi bhotvāna asādumekadā;

    and sometimes those that are bitter,

  37. 7.3

    Sāduṁ rasaṁ nājjhosāya bhuñje,

    don’t be attached to enjoying sweet tastes,

  38. 7.4

    Virodhamāsādusu nopadaṁsaye.

    and don’t despise the bitter.

  39. 8.1

    Phassena phuṭṭho na sukhena majje,

    Don’t be intoxicated by a pleasant touch,

  40. 8.2

    Dukkhena phuṭṭhopi na sampavedhe;

    and don’t tremble at a painful touch.

  41. 8.3

    Phassadvayaṁ sukhadukkhe upekkhe,

    Look with equanimity at the duality
    of pleasant and painful contacts,

  42. 8.4

    Anānuruddho aviruddha kenaci.

    without favoring or opposing anything.

  43. 9.1

    Papañcasaññā itarītarā narā,

    People generally let their perceptions proliferate;

  44. 9.2

    Papañcayantā upayanti saññino;

    perceiving and proliferating, they are attracted.

  45. 9.3

    Manomayaṁ gehasitañca sabbaṁ,

    Casting aside all mental constructions
    of the domestic life,

  46. 9.4

    Panujja nekkhammasitaṁ irīyati.

    wander intent on renunciation.

  47. 10.1

    Evaṁ mano chassu yadā subhāvito,

    When the mind is well developed like this
    regarding the six,

  48. 10.2

    Phuṭṭhassa cittaṁ na vikampate kvaci;

    it doesn’t waver at contacts at all.

  49. 10.3

    Te rāgadose abhibhuyya bhikkhavo,

    Mendicants, those who have mastered greed and hate

  50. 10.4

    Bhavattha jātimaraṇassa pāragā”ti.

    go beyond birth and death.”
