Non-restraint is delighting in the senses, restraint is not delighting in them.
ฉบับหลวงสังวรสูตร
ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราจักแสดงสังวรและอสังวรแก่เธอทั้งหลาย เธอทั้งหลายจงฟังเถิด ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็อสังวรย่อมมีอย่างไรรูปทั้งหลายที่พึงรู้แจ้งด้วยจักษุ อันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัดมีอยู่ ถ้าภิกษุยินดีกล่าวสรรเสริญพัวพันรูปนั้น ข้อนั้นภิกษุพึงทราบว่า เราย่อมเสื่อมจากกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย เหตุนั้นพระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่าเป็นความเสื่อม ฯลฯ รสทั้งหลายที่พึงรู้แจ้งด้วยลิ้น อันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัด มีอยู่ ฯลฯ ธรรมารมณ์ทั้งหลายที่พึงรู้แจ้งด้วยใจ อันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัด มีอยู่ ถ้าภิกษุยินดีกล่าวสรรเสริญพัวพันธรรมารมณ์นั้น ข้อนั้นภิกษุพึงทราบว่า เราย่อมเสื่อมจากกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย เหตุนั้นพระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่าเป็นความเสื่อม ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อสังวรย่อมมีด้วยประการฉะนี้ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สังวรย่อมมีอย่างไร ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย รูปทั้งหลายที่พึงรู้แจ้งด้วยจักษุ อันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ชวนให้กำหนัด มีอยู่ ถ้าภิกษุไม่ยินดี ไม่กล่าวสรรเสริญ ไม่พัวพันรูปนั้น ข้อนั้นภิกษุพึงทราบว่า เราย่อมไม่เสื่อมจากกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย เหตุนั้นพระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่าเป็นความไม่เสื่อม ฯลฯ รสทั้งหลายที่ พึงรู้แจ้งด้วยลิ้น ฯลฯ ธรรมารมณ์ทั้งหลายที่พึงรู้แจ้งด้วยใจ อันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ชวนให้กำหนัดมีอยู่ ถ้าภิกษุไม่ยินดี ไม่กล่าวสรรเสริญ ไม่พัวพันธรรมารมณ์นั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่าเป็นความไม่เสื่อม ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย สังวรย่อมมีด้วยประการฉะนี้ ฯ

“Mendicants, I will teach you who is restrained and who is unrestrained.

Kathañca, bhikkhave, asaṁvaro hoti?
And how is someone unrestrained?

Santi, bhikkhave, cakkhuviññeyyā rūpā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā.
There are sights known by the eye, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.
- 1.5
Tañce bhikkhu abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiṭṭhati, veditabbametaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā:
If a mendicant approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging to them, they should understand:

‘parihāyāmi kusalehi dhammehi.
‘My skillful qualities are declining.
- 1.7
Parihānañhetaṁ vuttaṁ bhagavatā’ti …pe…
For this is what the Buddha calls decline.’

santi, bhikkhave, jivhāviññeyyā rasā …pe…
There are sounds … smells … tastes … touches …
- 1.9
santi, bhikkhave, manoviññeyyā dhammā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā.
ideas known by the mind, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

Tañce bhikkhu abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiṭṭhati, veditabbametaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā:
If a mendicant approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging to them, they should understand:
