Akusalavitakkasutta
A mendicant plagued by bad thoughts is encouraged by a deity.
ฉบับหลวงอโยนิโสมนสิการสูตรที่ ๑๑
ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
สมัยหนึ่ง ภิกษุรูปหนึ่งพำนักอยู่ในแนวป่าแห่งหนึ่งในแคว้นโกศล สมัยนั้นแล เธอไปที่พักในกลางวันตรึกอกุศลวิตกอันลามกคือกามวิตกพยาบาทวิตก และวิหิงสาวิตก ฯ
ครั้งนั้นแล เทวดาผู้สิงอยู่ในแนวป่านั้นมีความเอ็นดู ใคร่ประโยชน์แก่ภิกษุนั้น หวังจะให้ภิกษุนั้นสังเวชจึงเข้าไปหาถึงที่อยู่ ครั้นแล้วได้กล่าวกะภิกษุนั้นด้วยคาถาว่า
ท่านถูกวิตกกิน เพราะมนสิการไม่แยบคาย ท่านจงละมนสิการไม่แยบคายเสีย และจงใคร่ครวญโดยแยบคาย ท่านปรารภพระศาสดา พระธรรม พระสงฆ์ และศีลของตนแล้วจะบรรลุความปราโมทย์ ปีติ และสุขโดยไม่ต้องสงสัย แต่นั้นท่านจักเป็นผู้มากด้วยความปราโมทย์ จักกระทำที่สุดแห่งทุกข์ได้ ฯ
ลำดับนั้นแล ภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้อันเทวดานั้นให้สังเวชถึงซึ่งความสลดใจแล้วแล ฯ

Unskillful Thoughts
- 1.1
Ekaṁ samayaṁ aññataro bhikkhu kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.
At one time one of the mendicants was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove.

Tena kho pana samayena so bhikkhu divāvihāragato pāpake akusale vitakke vitakketi, seyyathidaṁ—
Now at that time that mendicant, during their day’s meditation, was thinking bad, unskillful thoughts, that is,
- 1.3
kāmavitakkaṁ, byāpādavitakkaṁ, vihiṁsāvitakkaṁ.
sensual, malicious, and cruel thoughts.

Atha kho yā tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe adhivatthā devatā tassa bhikkhuno anukampikā atthakāmā taṁ bhikkhuṁ saṁvejetukāmā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ bhikkhuṁ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:
The deity haunting that forest had sympathy for that mendicant, and wanted what’s best for them. So they approached that mendicant wanting to stir them up, and addressed them in verse:

“Ayoniso manasikārā,
“Because of irrational application of mind,
- 2.2
so vitakkehi khajjasi;
you’re consumed by your thoughts.
- 2.3
Ayoniso paṭinissajja,
When you’ve given up irrationality,
- 2.4
yoniso anucintaya.
make sure your thoughts are rational.

Satthāraṁ dhammamārabbha,
Thinking about the Teacher, the teaching,
- 3.2
saṅghaṁ sīlāni attano;
the Saṅgha, and your own ethics,
- 3.3
Adhigacchasi pāmojjaṁ,
you’ll find gladness,
- 3.4
pītisukhamasaṁsayaṁ;
and rapture and bliss as well, no doubt.
- 3.5
Tato pāmojjabahulo,
And when you’re full of joy,
- 3.6
dukkhassantaṁ karissasī”ti.
you’ll make an end to suffering.”

Atha kho so bhikkhu tāya devatāya saṁvejito saṁvegamāpādīti.
Impelled by that deity, that mendicant was struck with a sense of urgency.
