Pākatindriyasutta
A group of mendicants in the forest had fallen into bad ways, becoming conceited and confused. A deity came to admonish them, making clear that they were only speaking of the badly behaved, not all mendicants.

สมัยหนึ่ง ภิกษุมากด้วยกันพำนักอยู่ในแนวป่าแห่งหนึ่งในแคว้นโกศล ล้วนเป็นผู้ฟุ้งซ่าน เห่อเหิม ขี้โอ่ ปากกล้า พูดเหลวไหลมีสติฟั่นเฟือน ไม่รู้สึกตน ไม่หนักแน่น จิตไม่มั่นคง มีอินทรีย์อันเปิดเผย ฯ
ครั้งนั้นแล เทวดาผู้สิงอยู่ในแนวป่านั้นมีความเอ็นดูใคร่ประโยชน์แก่ภิกษุเหล่านั้น หวังจะให้พวกเธอสังเวชจึงเข้าไปหาถึงที่อยู่ ครั้นแล้วได้กล่าวกะพวกเธอด้วยคาถาว่า ภิกษุทั้งหลายผู้เป็นสาวกของพระสมณโคดมในกาลก่อน มีปกติเป็นอยู่ง่าย ไม่มักได้ แสวงหาบิณฑบาต ไม่มักได้แสวงหาเสนาสนะ ท่านเหล่านั้นรู้ความไม่เที่ยงในโลกแล้ว ได้กระทำที่สุดแห่งทุกข์แล้ว ทำตนให้เป็นผู้เลี้ยงยาก ประดุจผู้เอาเปรียบชาวบ้านในบ้าน กินแล้วแล้วก็นอนหมกมุ่นอยู่ในเรือนของคนอื่น เราขอกระทำอัญชลีแก่พระสงฆ์แล้ว ขอกล่าวถึงภิกษุที่ควรกล่าวบางพวกในพระศาสนานี้ ท่านเหล่านั้นถูกเขาทอดทิ้งหาที่พึ่งมิได้ เหมือนอย่างคนที่ตายแล้วถูกเขาทอดทิ้งไว้ในป่าช้า ฉะนั้น เรากล่าวหมายถึงภิกษุจำพวกที่เป็นผู้ประมาทอยู่ แต่ท่านเหล่าใดเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาทอยู่ เราขอกระทำการนอบน้อมแก่ท่านเหล่านั้น ฯ
ลำดับนั้นแล ภิกษุเหล่านั้นเป็นผู้อันเทวดานั้นให้สังเวชถึงซึ่งความสลดใจแล้วแล ฯ

Ekaṁ samayaṁ sambahulā bhikkhū kosalesu viharanti aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe uddhatā unnaḷā capalā mukharā vikiṇṇavācā muṭṭhassatino asampajānā asamāhitā vibbhantacittā pākatindriyā.
At one time several mendicants were staying in the Kosalan lands in a certain forest grove. They were haughty, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, loose-tongued, unmindful, lacking situational awareness and immersion, with straying minds and undisciplined faculties.

Atha kho yā tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe adhivatthā devatā tesaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ anukampikā atthakāmā te bhikkhū saṁvejetukāmā yena te bhikkhū tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā te bhikkhū gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:
The deity haunting that forest had sympathy for those mendicants, and wanted what’s best for them. So they approached those mendicants wanting to stir them up, and addressed them in verse:

“Sukhajīvino pure āsuṁ,
“The mendicants used to live happily,
- 2.2
bhikkhū gotamasāvakā;
as disciples of Gotama.
- 2.3
Anicchā piṇḍamesanā,
Desireless they sought alms;
- 2.4
anicchā sayanāsanaṁ;
desireless they used their lodgings.
- 2.5
Loke aniccataṁ ñatvā,
Knowing that the world was impermanent
- 2.6
dukkhassantaṁ akaṁsu te.
they made an end of suffering.
- 3.1
Dupposaṁ katvā attānaṁ,
But now they’ve made themselves hard to look after,
- 3.2
gāme gāmaṇikā viya;
like chiefs in a village.
- 3.3
Bhutvā bhutvā nipajjanti,
They eat and eat and then lie down,
- 3.4
parāgāresu mucchitā.
unconscious in the homes of others.
- 4.1
Saṅghassa añjaliṁ katvā,
Having raised my cupped palms to the Saṅgha,
- 4.2
idhekacce vadāmahaṁ;
I speak here only about certain people.
- 4.3
Apaviddhā anāthā te,
They’re dregs, with no protector,
- 4.4
yathā petā tatheva te.
just like those who have passed away.
- 5.1
Ye kho pamattā viharanti,
I’m speaking about
- 5.2
te me sandhāya bhāsitaṁ;
those who live negligently.
- 5.3
Ye appamattā viharanti,
To those who live diligently
- 5.4
namo tesaṁ karomahan”ti.
I pay homage.”

Atha kho te bhikkhū tāya devatāya saṁvejitā saṁvegamāpādunti.
Impelled by that deity, those mendicants were struck with a sense of urgency.
