Vajjiputtasutta

Hearing the sounds of a city festival, a mendicant feels lonely in the forest. A deity comes to give them solace and support.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

สมัยหนึ่ง ภิกษุวัชชีบุตรรูปหนึ่งพำนักอยู่ในแนวป่าแห่งหนึ่งใกล้เมืองเวสาลี สมัยนั้นแล วาระแห่งมหรสพตลอดราตรีทั้งปวงย่อมมีในเมืองเวสาลี ฯ

ครั้งนั้นแล ภิกษุนั้นได้ฟังเสียงกึกก้องแห่งดนตรีอันบุคคลตีและบรรเลงแล้ว ในเมืองเวสาลี คร่ำครวญอยู่ ได้ภาษิตคาถานี้ในเวลานั้นว่า เราเป็นคนๆ เดียวอยู่ในป่า ประดุจท่อนไม้ที่เขาทิ้งแล้วในป่า ฉะนั้น ใครจะเป็นผู้ลามกกว่าเราในราตรีเช่นนี้หนอ ฯ

ลำดับนั้น เทวดาผู้สิงอยู่ในแนวป่านั้นมีความเอ็นดู ใคร่ประโยชน์แก่เธอ ใคร่จะยังเธอให้สลด จึงเข้าไปหาจนถึงที่อยู่ ครั้นแล้วได้กล่าวกะเธอด้วยคาถาว่า ท่านเป็นคนๆ เดียวเท่านั้นอยู่ในป่า ประดุจท่อนไม้ที่เขาทิ้งแล้วในป่า ฉะนั้น เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลายเป็นอันมากย่อมรักท่าน ประดุจสัตว์นรกรักผู้ที่จะไปสวรรค์ ฉะนั้น ฯ ลำดับนั้นแล ภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้อันเทวดาให้สังเวชถึงซึ่งความสลดแล้วแล ฯ

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ aññataro vajjiputtako bhikkhu vesāliyaṁ viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.

    At one time a certain Vajjian mendicant was staying near Vesālī in a certain forest grove.

    Tena kho pana samayena vesāliyaṁ vajjiputtako sabbaratticāro hoti.

    Now at that time the Vajjis were holding an all-night event in Vesālī.

    Atha kho so bhikkhu vesāliyā tūriyatāḷitavāditanigghosasaddaṁ sutvā paridevamāno tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Then that mendicant, complaining at the noise of musical instruments being beaten and played, on that occasion spoke this verse:

    “Ekakā mayaṁ araññe viharāma,

    “We dwell alone in the wilderness,

    Apaviddhaṁva vanasmiṁ dārukaṁ;

    like a log dumped in the forest.

    Etādisikāya rattiyā,

    On a night like this,

    Ko su nāmamhehi pāpiyo”ti.

    who’s worse off than me?”

    Atha kho yā tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe adhivatthā devatā tassa bhikkhuno anukampikā atthakāmā taṁ bhikkhuṁ saṁvejetukāmā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ bhikkhuṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    The deity haunting that forest had sympathy for that mendicant, and wanted what’s best for them. So they approached that mendicant wanting to stir them up, and addressed them in verse:

    “Ekakova tvaṁ araññe viharasi,

    “You dwell alone in the wilderness,

  13. 4.2

    Apaviddhaṁva vanasmiṁ dārukaṁ;

    like a log dumped in the forest.

  14. 4.3

    Tassa te bahukā pihayanti,

    Lots of people are jealous of you,

  15. 4.4

    Nerayikā viya saggagāminan”ti.

    like beings in hell of those going to heaven.”

  16. 5.1

    Atha kho so bhikkhu tāya devatāya saṁvejito saṁvegamāpādīti.

    Impelled by that deity, that mendicant was struck with a sense of urgency.
