The Questions of Todeyya
- 1.1
“Yasmiṁ kāmā na vasanti,
“In whom sensual pleasures do not dwell,”
- 1.2
(iccāyasmā todeyyo)
said Venerable Todeyya,
- 1.3
Taṇhā yassa na vijjati;
“and for whom there is no craving,
- 1.4
Kathaṅkathā ca yo tiṇṇo,
and who has crossed over indecision—
- 1.5
Vimokkho tassa kīdiso”.
of what kind is their liberation?”

“Yasmiṁ kāmā na vasanti,
“In whom sensual pleasures do not dwell,”

(todeyyāti bhagavā)
replied the Buddha,
- 2.3
Taṇhā yassa na vijjati;
“and for whom there is no craving,
- 2.4
Kathaṅkathā ca yo tiṇṇo,
and who has crossed over indecision—
- 2.5
Vimokkho tassa nāparo”.
there is no liberation that is further.”

“Nirāsaso so uda āsasāno,
“Are they free of hope,
or are they still in need of hope? - 3.2
Paññāṇavā so uda paññakappī;
Do they possess wisdom,
or are they still forming wisdom? - 3.3
Muniṁ ahaṁ sakka yathā vijaññaṁ,
O Sakyan, elucidate the sage to me,
- 3.4
Taṁ me viyācikkha samantacakkhu”.
so that I may understand, All-seer.”

“Nirāsaso so na ca āsasāno,
“They are free of hope,
they are not in need of hope. - 4.2
Paññāṇavā so na ca paññakappī;
They possess wisdom,
they are not still forming wisdom. - 4.3
Evampi todeyya muniṁ vijāna,
That, Todeyya, is how to understand a sage,
- 4.4
Akiñcanaṁ kāmabhave asattan”ti.
one who has nothing, unattached to sensual life.”
