  4. Rohinīkhattiyakaññāvatthu

    Kodhaṁ jahe vippajaheyya mānaṁ,

    Give up anger, get rid of conceit,

  6. 2

    Saṁyojanaṁ sabbamatikkameyya;

    and escape every fetter.

  7. 3

    Taṁ nāmarūpasmimasajjamānaṁ,

    Sufferings don’t befall one who has nothing,

  8. 4

    Akiñcanaṁ nānupatanti dukkhā.

    not clinging to name and form.

  9. Aññatarabhikkhuvatthu

    Yo ve uppatitaṁ kodhaṁ,

    When anger surges like a lurching chariot,

    rathaṁ bhantaṁva vāraye;

    keep it in check.

  12. 3

    Tamahaṁ sārathiṁ brūmi,

    That’s what I call a charioteer;

  13. 4

    rasmiggāho itaro jano.

    others just hold the reins.

    Akkodhena jine kodhaṁ,

    Defeat anger with kindness,

    asādhuṁ sādhunā jine;

    villainy with virtue,

  17. 3

    Jine kadariyaṁ dānena,

    stinginess with giving,

    saccenālikavādinaṁ.

    and lies with truth.

  19. Mahāmoggallānapañhavatthu

    Saccaṁ bhaṇe na kujjheyya,

    Speak the truth, do not be angry,

  21. 2

    dajjā appampi yācito;

    and give when asked, if only a little.

  22. 3

    Etehi tīhi ṭhānehi,

    By these three means,

  23. 4

    gacche devāna santike.

    you may enter the presence of the gods.

  24. Buddhapitubrāhmaṇavatthu

    Ahiṁsakā ye munayo,

    Those harmless sages,

  26. 2

    niccaṁ kāyena saṁvutā;

    always restrained in body,

  27. 3

    Te yanti accutaṁ ṭhānaṁ,

    go to the state that does not pass,

  28. 4

    yattha gantvā na socare.

    where there is no sorrow.

  29. Puṇṇadāsīvatthu

  30. 1

    Sadā jāgaramānānaṁ,

    Always wakeful,

  31. 2

    ahorattānusikkhinaṁ;

    practicing night and day,

  32. 3

    Nibbānaṁ adhimuttānaṁ,

    focused only on extinguishment,

  33. 4

    atthaṁ gacchanti āsavā.

    their defilements come to an end.

  34. Atulaupāsakavatthu

  35. 1

    Porāṇametaṁ atula,

    It’s always been this way, Atula,

  36. 2

    netaṁ ajjatanāmiva;

    it’s not just today.

  37. 3

    Nindanti tuṇhimāsīnaṁ,

    They blame you when you’re silent,

  38. 4

    nindanti bahubhāṇinaṁ;

    they blame you when you speak a lot,

  39. 5

    Mitabhāṇimpi nindanti,

    and even when you speak just right:

  40. 6

    natthi loke anindito.

    no one in the world escapes blame.

    Na cāhu na ca bhavissati,

    There never was, nor will be,

  42. 2

    na cetarahi vijjati;

    nor is there today,

  43. 3

    Ekantaṁ nindito poso,

    someone who is wholly praised

  44. 4

    ekantaṁ vā pasaṁsito.

    or wholly blamed.

  45. 1

    Yañce viññū pasaṁsanti,

    If, after watching them day in day out,

  46. 2

    anuvicca suve suve;

    discerning people praise

  47. 3

    Acchiddavuttiṁ medhāviṁ,

    that sage of impeccable conduct,

  48. 4

    paññāsīlasamāhitaṁ.

    endowed with ethics and wisdom;

  49. 1

    Nikkhaṁ jambonadasseva,

    like a pendant of Black Plum River gold,

  50. 2

    ko taṁ ninditumarahati;

    who is worthy to criticize them?

  51. 3

    Devāpi naṁ pasaṁsanti,

    Even the gods praise them,

  52. 4

    brahmunāpi pasaṁsito.

    and by the Divinity, too, they’re praised.

  53. Chabbaggiyavatthu

  54. 1

    Kāyappakopaṁ rakkheyya,

    Guard against ill-tempered deeds,

  55. 2

    kāyena saṁvuto siyā;

    be restrained in body.

  56. 3

    Kāyaduccaritaṁ hitvā,

    Giving up bad bodily conduct,

  57. 4

    kāyena sucaritaṁ care.

    conduct yourself well in body.

  58. 1

    Vacīpakopaṁ rakkheyya,

    Guard against ill-tempered words,

  59. 2

    vācāya saṁvuto siyā;

    be restrained in speech.

  60. 3

    Vacīduccaritaṁ hitvā,

    Giving up bad verbal conduct,

  61. 4

    vācāya sucaritaṁ care.

    conduct yourself well in speech.

  62. 1

    Manopakopaṁ rakkheyya,

    Guard against ill-tempered thoughts,

  63. 2

    manasā saṁvuto siyā;

    be restrained in mind.

  64. 3

    Manoduccaritaṁ hitvā,

    Giving up bad mental conduct,

  65. 4

    manasā sucaritaṁ care.

    conduct yourself well in mind.

  66. 1

    Kāyena saṁvutā dhīrā,

    An attentive one is restrained in body

  67. 2

    atho vācāya saṁvutā;

    restrained also in speech,

  68. 3

    Manasā saṁvutā dhīrā,

    in thought, too, they are restrained:

  69. 4

    te ve suparisaṁvutā.

    they are restrained in every way.

  70. 5

    Kodhavaggo sattarasamo.
