Paṭhamarūpārāmasutta
Gods and humans take delight in the six sense, but the Realized One does not. This teaching is illustrated with a long series of verses.
ฉบับหลวงเทวทหสูตร
ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ นิคมชื่อว่าเทวทหะของสากยราชทั้งหลาย ในสักกชนบท ณ ที่นั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสกะภิกษุทั้งหลายว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราไม่กล่าวว่า ความไม่ประมาทในผัสสายตนะ ๖ อันภิกษุทั้งปวงเทียวควรทำ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย แต่เราไม่กล่าวว่า ความไม่ประมาทในผัสสายตนะ ๖ อันภิกษุทั้งปวงเทียวไม่ควรทำ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุเหล่าใดเป็นอรหันตขีณาสพอยู่จบพรหมจรรย์ ทำกิจที่ควรทำเสร็จแล้ว ปลงภาระลงแล้ว มีประโยชน์ตนอันบรรลุโดยลำดับแล้ว มีสังโยชน์ในภพหมดสิ้นแล้ว เป็นผู้หลุดพ้นแล้ว เพราะรู้โดยชอบ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรากล่าวว่า ความไม่ประมาทในผัสสายตนะ ๖ อันภิกษุเหล่านั้นไม่ควรทำ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะเหตุว่าความไม่ประมาทของภิกษุเหล่านั้นไม่ควรแล้ว เพื่อประมาทได้อีก เพราะความไม่ประมาทนั้น ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย แต่ว่าภิกษุเหล่าใดยังเป็นเสขะยังไม่บรรลุอรหัตผล ปรารถนาธรรมเป็นแดนเกษมจากโยคะอันไม่มีธรรมอื่นยิ่งกว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรากล่าวว่า ความไม่ประมาทในผัสสายตนะ ๖ อันภิกษุเหล่านั้นควรทำ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะเหตุว่ารูปทั้งหลายอันจะพึงรู้แจ้งด้วยจักษุ อันเป็นที่รื่นรมย์ใจก็มี อันไม่เป็นที่รื่นรมย์ใจก็มี รูปเหล่านั้นถูกต้องแล้วๆ ย่อมไม่กลุ้มรุมจิตของบุคคลผู้ไม่ประมาท ตั้งอยู่ เพราะการไม่ถูกกลุ้มรุมจิต ความเพียรเป็นคุณอันบุคคลนั้นปรารภแล้ว ไม่ให้ย่อหย่อน สติเป็นธรรมชาติอันบุคคลนั้นเข้าไปตั้งไว้แล้ว ไม่ให้หลงลืม กายสงบ ไม่กระสับกระส่าย จิตตั้งมั่น มีอารมณ์อันเดียว ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราเห็นผลแห่งความไม่ประมาทนี้แลจึงกล่าวว่า ความไม่ประมาทในผัสสายตนะ ๖ อันภิกษุเหล่านั้นควรทำ ฯลฯ ธรรมารมณ์อันจะพึงรู้แจ้งด้วยใจ อันเป็นที่รื่นรมย์ใจก็มี อันไม่เป็นที่รื่นรมย์ใจก็มี ธรรมารมณ์เหล่านั้นถูกต้องแล้วๆ ย่อมไม่กลุ้มรุมจิตของบุคคลผู้ไม่ประมาทตั้งอยู่ เพราะการไม่กลุ้มรุมจิต ความเพียรเป็นคุณอันบุคคลนั้นปรารภแล้วไม่ให้ย่อหย่อน สติเป็นธรรมชาติอันบุคคลนั้นเข้าไปตั้งไว้แล้ว ไม่ให้หลงลืม กายสงบไม่กระสับกระส่าย จิตตั้งมั่น มีอารมณ์อันเดียว ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราเห็นผลแห่งความไม่ประมาทนี้แล จึงกล่าวว่า ความไม่ประมาทในผัสสายตนะ ๖ อันภิกษุเหล่านั้นควรทำ ฯ

“Rūpārāmā, bhikkhave, devamanussā rūparatā rūpasammuditā.
“Mendicants, gods and humans like sights, they love them and enjoy them.

Rūpavipariṇāmavirāganirodhā dukkhā, bhikkhave, devamanussā viharanti.
But when sights perish, fade away, and cease, gods and humans live in suffering.

Saddārāmā, bhikkhave, devamanussā saddaratā saddasammuditā.

Tathāgato ca kho, bhikkhave, arahaṁ sammāsambuddho rūpānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ viditvā na rūpārāmo na rūparato na rūpasammudito.
The Realized One has truly understood the origin, disappearance, gratification, drawback, and escape of sights, so he doesn’t like, love, or enjoy them.

When sights perish, fade away, and cease, the Realized One lives happily.

Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

“Rūpā saddā rasā gandhā,
“Sights, sounds, tastes, smells,

phassā dhammā ca kevalā;
touches and ideas, the lot of them—
- 2.3
Iṭṭhā kantā manāpā ca,
they’re likable, desirable, and pleasurable
- 2.4
yāvatatthīti vuccati.
as long as you can say that they exist.
- 3.1
Sadevakassa lokassa,
For all the world with its gods,
- 3.2
ete vo sukhasammatā;
this is what they deem happiness.
- 3.3
Yattha cete nirujjhanti,
And where they cease
- 3.4
taṁ tesaṁ dukkhasammataṁ.
is deemed as suffering for them.
- 4.1
Sukhaṁ diṭṭhamariyebhi,
The noble ones have seen that happiness
- 4.2
sakkāyassa nirodhanaṁ;
is the cessation of substantial reality.
- 4.3
Paccanīkamidaṁ hoti,
This insight by those who see
- 4.4
sabbalokena passataṁ.
contradicts the whole world.
- 5.1
Yaṁ pare sukhato āhu,
What others say is happiness
- 5.2
tadariyā āhu dukkhato;
the noble ones say is suffering.
- 5.3
Yaṁ pare dukkhato āhu,
What others say is suffering
- 5.4
tadariyā sukhato vidū.
the noble ones know as happiness.

Passa dhammaṁ durājānaṁ,
See, this teaching is hard to understand,
- 6.2
sammūḷhettha aviddasu;
it confuses the ignorant.
- 6.3
Nivutānaṁ tamo hoti,
There is darkness for the shrouded;
- 6.4
andhakāro apassataṁ.
blackness for those who don’t see.
- 7.1
Satañca vivaṭaṁ hoti,
But the good are open;
- 7.2
āloko passatāmiva;
like light for those who see.
- 7.3
Santike na vijānanti,
Though close, they do not understand,
- 7.4
maggā dhammassa akovidā.
the seekers inexpert in the teaching.
- 8.1
Bhavarāgaparetebhi,
They’re mired in desire for continued existence,
- 8.2
bhavarāgānusārībhi;
flowing along the stream of lives,
- 8.3
Māradheyyānupannehi,
mired in Māra’s dominion:
- 8.4
nāyaṁ dhammo susambudho.
this teaching isn’t easy for them to understand.
- 9.1
Ko nu aññatra mariyebhi,
Who, apart from the noble ones,
- 9.2
Padaṁ sambuddhumarahati;
is qualified to understand this state?
- 9.3
Yaṁ padaṁ sammadaññāya,
Having rightly understood this state,
- 9.4
Parinibbanti anāsavā”ti.
the undefiled are fully extinguished.”
